Did you know that approximately 35 million Americans wear dentures? If you’re missing some or all of your teeth, dentures provide an affordable and effective way to make chewing and speaking easier. Michael Weiner, DDS, at Howe Dental Associates in Passaic, New Jersey, regularly prescribes dentures to restore both men and women’s smiles. Dentures are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth. Unlike dental implants, dentures are removable. Dentures take some getting used to. However, thanks to modern manufacturing techniques and materials, dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever.
If you’re missing multiple teeth and it’s negatively affecting your confidence, Dr. Weiner can help you choose the type of denture that best aligns with your lifestyle and individual needs.
At Howe Dental Associates, Dr. Weiner offers two types of dentures, including:
Full, or complete, dentures feature a pink, flesh-colored base that fits snugly over your gums. The base of your upper denture covers the roof of your mouth, while your lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to make room for your tongue. Dr. Weiner places full dentures after extracting all of your remaining teeth, a process that can take a series of months.
If you’re missing only some of your teeth, Dr. Weiner might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures feature a metal framework that attaches to your remaining permanent teeth. Partial dentures also offer an alternative to a traditional bridge.
Getting dentures takes a series of weeks and several appointments.
At your first appointment, Dr. Weiner performs an oral exam and determines which type of dentures are right for you. Afterward, he makes a series of impressions of your jaw.
After taking impressions, Dr. Weiner creates wax molds or plastic patterns. You try on these patterns and he assesses their color, shape, and fit. After completing your denture model, Dr. Weiner sends it to a laboratory that develops your final cast.
You return to Howe Dental Associates about a week later, and Dr. Weiner places your dentures and makes any necessary adjustments.
Wearing dentures isn’t painful, but they do take some getting used to. In the first 24-48 hours after receiving your dentures, it’s perfectly normal to experience some irritation, swelling, and general discomfort. Be patient and follow Dr. Weiner’s instructions. Slowly but surely, your mouth will adjust.
